ICH volume (ABC/2)

Kothari 1996CTNeuro

Ellipsoid approximation of hematoma volume. A = largest diameter on the slice with largest hemorrhage; B = diameter perpendicular to A on the same slice; C = craniocaudal extent.

Volume
Volume–mL

Measuring C by slice count

  • Weight each slice versus the largest slice: ≥75% of the largest area counts as 1, 25–75% counts as 0.5, <25% counts as 0.
  • C = weighted slice count × slice thickness (cm).
  • ICH volume ≥30 mL is a component of the ICH score; ≥60 mL is associated with high early mortality.
